A next step will be the publication of an edited book enlarging the focus to include issues of extremism and radicalisation. We will keep you informed on the progress of that project.
6th EARLI-SIG 13 Conference & 2nd InZentIM Conference
The international conference „Migration, Social Transformation, and Education for Democratic Citizenship“ took place from August 27-29, 2018 on the Essen Campus of the University of Duisburg-Essen. The conference was jointly hosted be the Special Interest Group Moral and Democratic Education of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI SIG 13) and the Interdisciplinary Center for Integration and Migration Research of the University of Duisburg-Essen (InZentIM).
Migration both causes and requires societal change. To date, processes of acculturation have been insufficiently addressed as a context for civic and citizenship education. Also, specific measures of civic and citizenship education purposely targeting societal change as caused by migration, as well as their potential effects, have been investigated too seldom so far. The conference therefore aimed at an internationalisation of the discourse relating to issues of civic and citizenship education in immigration societies. Over the course of three days, an intensive international and interdisciplinary exchange took place between scientists and scholars from Educational Science, Historical Science, Linguistic Science, Political Science, Psychology, Religious Studies, and Sociology, from 16 nations.
With five keynote lectures, two invited symposia by the World Education Research Association (WERA) and the German Youth Institute (DJI), four regular symposia, ten paper sessions and a poster exhibition, the conference offered a platform to various scientific formats. Multi-perspectival debates were held on how new challenges of civic and citizenship Education that arise in the context of migration and integration can be described, handled in educational practice, and be accompanied by scientific research.
The InZentIM Junior Scientists Meeting and the SIG 13 Young Researchers Lunch gave young researcher further opportunities for networking and exchanging ideas.
We are delighted about the successful and productive outcome of the conference. As Conference Organisers, we like to thank all the contributors for the enriching and promising scientific exchange.
Video recordings of the conference´s keynote lectures are accessible here.
Abstracts of all contributions are accessible via the Book of Abstracts.
